The Open House Incident: When Parenting Gets Messy (and Hilarious)

There are moments in life when you realize you’re not just a parent—you’re the unwitting star of a slapstick comedy. This weekend, I discovered my own comedic timing at an open house, of all places. Picture this: a beautiful home, the smell of fresh mountain air, and my kiddo deciding it was the perfect time to make a deposit in the guest bathroom. Not the financial kind.

As I’m chatting with the hostess, I notice my child emerge from the hallway with the subtle panic only a parent can decode. The words, “I couldn’t get it to flush down” echo in my head like a horror movie soundtrack. I bravely excuse myself, heart pounding, and head for my car—because, of course, I keep a box of rubber gloves in the trunk. (Parenting tip: always be prepared for biohazards.)

Back inside, I’m greeted by a scene that would make even the most seasoned plumber weep. Skid marks everywhere. The toilet, valiantly trying to do its job, has clearly met its match. So, there I am, in an open house, sleeves rolled up, scrubbing away and trying to look like this is all just part of the service. If there were Olympic medals for bathroom cleanups, I’d have taken gold.

Some might say this is a parenting low. But honestly? These are the moments I’ll remember (and laugh about) long after the carpets have been replaced. Life is messy, unpredictable, and sometimes, it’s just plain funny. And if you ever need rubber gloves, you know who to call.
